Eco-Schools
We are delighted to have had a visit from Gareth from Eco-Schools NI to deliver our brand new Green Flag and present our certificates. All the Eco Warriors have worked so hard this year and haven’t been afraid to get stuck in. As part of our application we were looking into Waste Management. We entered a competition called ‘Wheelie Big Challenge’. This involved the children taking part in a workshop to learn about the correct way we should dispose of our waste and why it is important. The children then had to weigh the rubbish in the bins in school to collect data for the challenge. The children created posters for the classrooms and dinner hall. They were also bin monitors at dinner time ensuring children were using the correct bin and they emptied the brown bins into our new composter a number of times during the week. The children then had to weigh the waste again at the end of the challenge to collect data to show the improvement made with our waste management within school.
I am delighted to announce that all the hard work was worth it and we came first in the competition with Eco-Schools NI. This is a wonderful achievement and the Eco Warriors should be very proud of themselves. A big thank you to the commitment of our Governor Mrs Annie Mullen and to Mrs Hegarty our Eco Co ordinator. This is the second time in a row that we have received the Green Flag and it is so important that everyone takes on the responsibility of looking after our environment.
