50th Anniversary Celebration
On Friday 8th November St Peter’s Primary School celebrated its 50th Anniversary. Fr Donnelly celebrated the mass and remembered Fr Herron for his vision of creating three schools within the parish.
St Peter’s opened its doors officially to all classes in September 1974.(Yr 7 children apparently walked from their previous village school (behind the current parochial hall) to the new St Peter’s School the last two weeks of June).
The school in 1974 had three classrooms and one playroom and a hall. Three permanent teachers were employed in the school - Mr T Kennedy (Principal R.I.P), Mrs M Morris (R.I.P) and Ms S Gormley (R.I.P) Other staff included Mr P. Devine (R.I.P) the Caretaker. Mrs A Falls (R.I.P) the Secretary and the Cooks Mrs M Mc Glinchey and Mrs M Devine (R.I.P).
The school was founded under the direction of Fr Herron and blessed by Bishop Daly on November 1974.
On Friday night members of the community and past pupils attended a celebration mass in the Sacred Heart Church.
The children in the school sang sweetly throughout the mass under the direction of Mrs Sweeney. Mrs Devine decorated the church beautifully for the occasion.
Afterwards everyone was invited to the school afterwards for refreshments and a chance to catch up with old friends and reminisce about past times.
The current parents provided a remarkable feast of culinary delights, it was greatly appreciated and thank you to Friends of St Peter’s for all their support and help on the night.
It was a truly enjoyable night and with God’s will St Peter’s will continue to flourish and build many more memories- ‘Growing and learning together in Christ in God’s Love. ‘
