URGENT SAFEGUARDING ALERT - CATFISHING RISKS AND SAFER SCHOOLS NI APP RESOURCES
The Minister For Education has sent a letter to all schools in light of a deeply concerning case that has recently come to public attention, highlighting the severe dangers of online Catfishing. This case, which originated in Northern Ireland, involved an individual who used fake online profiles to deceive and exploit children across the globe. The consequences of his actions were tragic, including the death of a 12-year-old girl.
This case has understandably generated significant anxiety among professionals, parents, and young people. It underscores the urgent need to reinforce online safety education and ensure that our school communities are equipped to protect children and young people from such threats.
As you may be aware, the Department of Education works with iNEQE Safeguarding Group to make available the Safer Schools NI app to help parents/ carers, children and young people keep safe online.
How can you respond?
In response to this case, Safer Schools NI has developed crucial resources to help parents and carers understand and address the dangers of Catfishing. We urge all schools to take the following actions:
1.
Provide Parents and Carers with Access to Safer Schools NI: Ensure that all parents and carers within your school community are aware of and have access to the Safer Schools NI app. This resource, funded by the Department, offers valuable information and guidance on safeguarding and online safety, including specific advice on Catfishing.
2.
Reinforce the Message: Even if your school has previously promoted Safer Schools NI, please take this opportunity to remind parents and carers about its availability and emphasise its importance in light of current events.
3.
Register Your School: If your school has not yet registered with Safer Schools NI, we strongly encourage you to do so immediately. Registration is free and provides access to a library of online safety resources and support. You can register at saferschoolsni.co.uk. leaflet attached
At St Peter's we have registered long ago with the safer school App and have encouraged Parents to download the app, so far a few parents have downloaded the app, today we are appealing to all parents to keep abreast of the changes and do all that they can to keep your child safe. Just think - would you let a stranger into your house? that is what can sadly happen online..... Please connect to this app and stay informed.
